Not that there is any doubt that the $3.98 price on the rear cover means it's a very early and probably first pressing, but here's an advertisement for Prestige/New Jazz in 1960 with a price of $4.98:
why not a discount price applied to older unsold numbers? That's a possibility as well, although I've seen some copies that have $4.98 stickers over the original price $3.98 price tag.

prices rose as time went on. that's the explanation there.

My copy of Jazz 'N' Pops dated April 1959 has new releases and suggested prices. In April 1959, the New Jazz suggested price was $3.98. There were no stereo albums listed in the catalog at the time. Prestige had a price of $3.98 for 10 inchers and $4.98 for 12 inchers except for the 8200 series which was $3.98 . Interestingly, those 16RPM were listed separately at $7.95.

it will be very useful to gather threads under categories, Labels for example. doin' researches it's often difficult for me, to find info I know are somewhere but are hidden and not easy to recover.

hey Admin, please start a unique New Jazz thread from Jazz Record Center auction: New Jazz 8207 sticker price 4.98 over printed price 3.98, I presume. This makes me think covers were printed with the 3.98 price until late 1959 early 1960 when the price was changed. Leftovers had a 4.98 sticker placed over the original price and all remaining jackets were printed without the price.

The issue of identifying first pressings for New Jazz is paramount to me personally mainly because of the hiss issue. I haven't followed this thread before but now that I'm reading through it this topic seems like a bit of a mess. I had a narrow DG one side no DG other side copy of The Quest recently and it had the hiss pretty bad (it was returned).
I think it might make sense to focus on which copies have the hiss and which don't, that might help us to focus on which pressings are good ones opposed to which ones are or aren't first (though logically it seems to make sense that the earlier pressings may not have the hiss). For all we know at a certain point in time any New Jazz copy may be susceptible to the hiss and it may vary from copy to copy even in the same pressing run.
As for Prestige, at least we seem to know that all NYC label pressings don't have the hiss. NJ labels seem spotty, and all trident labels seem suspect as well.

I also recently happened to be acquiring many trident label and NJ label Prestiges. The earliest NJs seemed ok (Miles Workin, Red Garland All Kinds of Weather), but all the later NJ Prestiges and the tridents seemed suspect. I have every now and then come across a trident label that's OK.

no hiss on my many New Jazz, mostly original. my few Trident Prestiges, Coltrane and Dolphy, are all good but all are originals: 7353: Bahia, 7378: The Last Trane, 7334 Memorial Album, 7382 Here and There, 7350, 7366 In Europe vol.2 and 3.
