Not a great picture, but they look pretty similar to me.

So price on rear up to Cats (8217). Wide deep groove up to Far Cry (8270) which has a narrow groove, and one sided DG on Cracklin' (8286).

Also here's a good list of the New Jazz releases:
Seeing them all lined up like that makes me want to complete the whole set! Although Dave Pike's Limbo Carnival kinda sticks out.

So price on rear up to Cats (8217). do you mean that all numbers from 8201 to 8217 are documented with priced cover OR that the last known number is 8217? and does anyone know if priced covers are older (and original) vs non priced covers?

Good point. Last known appears to be 8217. I also found them on the following:
Midnight Oil, Jerome Richardson, 1958, New Jazz NJLP 8205
The New York Scene, George Wallington, 1959, New Jazz NJLP 8207
Mal/4: Trio, Mal Waldron, 1959, New Jazz NJLP 8208
Also $4.98 sticker over original price (i've seen this on a few)
In a Minor Groove, Dorothy Ashby, 1959, New Jazz NJLP 8209
We Three, Roy Haynes, Phineas Newborn, Paul Chambers, 1959, New Jazz NJLP 8210
Alone with the Blues, Ray Bryant, 1959, New Jazz NJLP 8213
Big Stuff, Gil Evans, 1959, New Jazz NJLP 8215
Coolin', Teddy Charles, Idrees Sulieman, John Jenkins, Mal Waldron, 1959, New Jazz NJLP 8216 The Cats, Tommy Flanagan, John Coltrane, Kenny Burrell, Idrees Sulieman, 1959, New Jazz NJLP 8217

I have a New Jazz test for Outward Bound that has no deep groove and a blank label (similar to this although I didn't get mine on eBay). The runnout is identical to my regular first pressing, but I've often wondered if it's legit.

Not that there is any doubt that the $3.98 price on the rear cover means it's a very early and probably first pressing, but here's an advertisement for Prestige/New Jazz in 1960 with a price of $4.98:

My only other thoughts at the moment about price stamp would be that it would have been promotional price as the label was taking off or perhaps it was associated with a specific store and/or mail order.

why not a discount price applied to older unsold numbers?
