Sorry for such a mundane thread but it's time I replaced mine again.
I'm not an audiophile type but I am a believer in the old adage "you get what you pay for".
I'm really not interested in hifi and haven't anytime for laborious specifications that mean nothing to me but at the same time I can't help thinking that I should be spending a bit more on a cartridge and stylus.
I've been spending only about £35-£40 every time I buy a new stylus. My question is how much do you spend when the time comes to replace yours?

you're quite right about the adage but sometimes you can get 95% with less money
i'd say it all depends on your current cartridge and if you're happy with it. upgrading it makes sense depending on your record collection, arm/turntable set-up and so on... then the thread could escalate to audiophile territory that you rather not enter ;-D

For some years now I have spent about £100.00. I used to spend about the same as you but then after much reading around upgraded to a different Ortofon and then stuck with that particular model.

I think I'm going to trade up to an ortofon 2m red plug and play.
OK that's enough about hifi. Back to the music.

Less explaining to do. Now I just have to explain why I need yet another record or worse I need a replacement (i.e. original) for an album I already own.

I recently bought a $200 Jico SAS as a replacement stylus for a busted Shure VN5xMR. This is the only stylus now made to fit the discontinued Shure V15VxMR cartridge.
How I busted the Shure stylus is too painful to recount. Alcohol was involved.

@gtf Stylus on a registry?! Talk about living the dream! pjd that's rough. I haven't broken a stylus yet, but I've been close a couple of times.

just acquired an ortofon mono cart to get the best of early microgrooves with a small vintage mono set-up. when all is set and running, i'll upgrade the cart. what will Mrs Fish list to level the registry challenge?
