Wow. That product is way off the mark when it comes to marketing to a Blue Note nut like myself. I would think it would be hard to make a product with the Blue Note name on it unappealing to me but this is surprisingly uninteresting. It seems like some wacky brainchild of Don Was', maybe like an Emperor's new clothes scenario where he had all these ideas for a product and no one in marketing at the company was brave enough to tell him the truth.

Any chance we're going to see Eric Dolphy – The Illinois Concert as part of the new Blue Note boxes being released? I would buy that.

now THAT is an idea, GST. any sound dolphy ever made is essential, if you ask me.

Pretty sure all copies of that have Van Gelder side 1 only (at least mono copies). My current and previous copy both do. Does it have the laminated cover? If so I'd assume it to be a first pressing. My previous copy had DG one side but no laminated cover, makes sense to assume laminated came earlier.

i think the key indicator that Van Gelder on one side for a release like that is alright to indicate a first is that the situation required to produce it is ludicrous for a company as small as blue note was at the time. that sentence might not make sense at first, but i think the proper syntax is all there.

Certainly a laminated cover. Looks legit to me, all details match my copy at least. Yeah, it's the only one-sided Van Gelder I'm aware of, though you'd know more about it than me Dottor. Incidentally Van Gelder side 1 is also mentioned in your pdf guide on the LJC site (referencing LJC's copy I think).

Strange Cohen's guide doesn't mention this, unless I'm missing something.

Incidentally Van Gelder side 1 is also mentioned in your pdf guide on the LJC site (referencing LJC's copy I think). thanks cellery for evaluating my knowledge so good but looking for the correct info is pretty hard. I'm curious enough to compare infos from various sources. Fred Cohen states Van Gelder on both sides (I presume 'cause he doesn't make exception for this number). this could be a unique variation. another one: 4216, Tony Williams Spring. Cohen states NYC address on back cover, which I've never seen on tens of copies. BUT today, he offers an original STEREO copy underlining NO ADDRESS on back cover....mono and stereo issued at the same time. re this number, STEREO has P on one side only, 1 or 2, never on both; MONO should have P both sides. anyone with Spring mono to check? lots more.

Andrew Hill, Andrew!!!, Blue Note 4203, Liberty mono with sticker. my copy has no RVG in dead wax although recorded by the Man. Cohen doesn't mention RVG for mono, for stereo he does. is this an exception confirming the rule?

I'm trying to figure out the backsleeves of the BN 5000 series:
Is there a database somewhere, where I can see the different types of backcovers. Also, an explanation on the site as to how these covers where used. Simultaneously? Interchangeably? I assume, that all are for "first" pressings, but from what I can see, all the 5000er releases seem to have at least two variations (if not all three). I've even seen a fourth variation with something like an open box on the left hand side.
The labels all have the Lexington address.
Cheers
