Record Store Day, Black Friday 2016: Jazz Preview
Well, it's upon us again. I know these largely don't appeal to the jazz record collecting community, because original pressings are the name of the game. However, it's curious to see what new material can be dug up and peek into the hoopla of the larger vinyl industry and collector community (and have a valid excuse not to join the wife at 5:00 am at the other stores, right?)
Recent RSD events had a fair offering in my opinion (including): 1. Miles Davis - Prestige 10" box sets 2. John Coltrane - The Roulette Sides 3. Bill Evans - Some Other Time: The Lost Session from the Black Forest 4. Dizzy Gillespie - The Champ 5. Dave Brubeck Octet - Distinctive Rhythm Instrumentals 10" 6. Cal Tjader Trio 7. Curtis Fuller - Blues-Ette 8. Larry Young - In Paris etc, etc
This Black Friday edition seems less appealing. I suspect after 8 years of RSD, labels are either scratching their collective heads at how to get jazz fans excited and have given up, are running low on unreleased materials in the vaults, or are holding out for the big Spring edition.
Here are some of the exclusives for RSD: Black Friday 2016 (Yes, I've done the legwork for you)
1. Chet Baker - Love For Sale: Live at the Rising Sun •1978 live performance • 2x12" LP •Justin Time Records •4000 copies
2. Ornette Coleman - An Evening with Ornette Coleman Vol. 1 •1965 Performance, Fairfield Hall, Croydon, England •LP •ORG Records •2500 copies
3. The Three Sounds feat. Gene Harris - Groovin at the Penthouse 1964-1968 •LP •Resonance Records •1200 copies
4. Various Artists - Jazz Dispensary: Holiday Treats •Kenny Burrell, Pharoah Sanders (only notable contributors in my opinion) •LP •Fantasy Records •1500 copies
5. Ben Webster - Gone With the Wind •Reissue of live performance: Jan. 1965, Montmartre Jazzhus, Copenhagen, Denmark •LP •ORG Records •2000 copies
6. Steve Grossman - Some Shapes to Come •Reissue of 1974 release •LP •Tidal Waves Records •900 copies •Regional release only
7. Sun Ra & His Arkestra - At Inter-Media Arts April 1991 •3xLP or 2xCD •Modern Harmonic Records •1000 copies LP, 1000 copies CD •Regional release only
8. Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis: "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" / "Little Drummer Boy" •12" single •Blue Engine Records •2000 copies •'Christmas Tree' shaped collectible record

Arick,
Are you talking about RSD in the US? Haven't we already had RSD in the UK? I don't really follow these things but a quick search seems to suggest that in the UK it was held back in April while in the US it is forthcoming on 25th Nov. Is that correct?
Well done in looking out all the jazz releases. I'm afraid I wouldn't be rushing to buy any of these, even assuming I could. I rather distrust live recordings unless I am familiar with them and know the sound quality and a good proportion of these seem to be live recordings. The Ornette Coleman/Fairfield Hall was originally issued as a double-LP set. It looks as if it's being issued as two separate records here -- presumably one this time and one next time? The sound quality is not all that good -- nowhere near as good as the Golden Circle Blue Note LPs, for instance. I recently bought the old Pye box of the Fairfield Hall set and was rather disappointed and may not keep it. Thankfully, it wasn't expensive.
Perhaps I'm simply not the intended audience for RSD but these have the distinctive sound of barrels being scraped, I think -- or is that grossly unfair?

Alun,
Each calendar year there are 2 RSD events. The big event is held each April and then there is a much smaller one the day after Thanksgiving (US), which is essentially a shopping holiday as it kicks off the Christmas season.
I don't think that's entirely unfair, in fact, it's in line with my analyses as well.

Yes, the Black Friday RSD is US-only event, not one here in the UK. I do treat RSD with a healthy amount of caution but the occasional gem does arise. This year (meaning RSD in April 2016) bought the excellent Resonance Records Bill Evans double LP that Arick mentions above. It's not every day that two LPs' worth of previously unreleased high quality, well packaged Bill Evans studio recordings become available - this is a future collectible that ought to appeal to the sensibilities of our community.
Next year (RSD 2017) does also promise something of interest for jazz vinyl collectors. I've seen reports that the just released on CD Miles Davis Bootlegs Volume 5 will come out in some form on vinyl. That'll be an awful lot of second great Quintet material albeit a big chunk of it being material from the original 1960s releases that most of us will already own. However, I think there will be enough new material to make it worth considering.

Thanks, both, for clarifying.

to the OP: I bought RSD versions of The Champ in April and the Blues-Ette last year, so I think your release dates may be off.
