Prompted by comments related to Roy DuNann in the RVG memorial post at JazzCollector.com, I concocted a big Spotify playlist of a bunch of albums recorded by him. This is one of them, which is a gorgeous sounding album. The Spotify edition is stereo, with has a nice balance with a wide, stereo piano sound (surprising since some later Roy DuNann stereo issues have everything panned either hard left or hard right). I'm considering the original mono pressing of this album, anyone have any experience?

I have an original mono copy......somewhere, don't think I have ever listened to it. I will have to dig it out and give it a spin. As a drummer I have always been a fan of Shelly, he has got to be one of the best brush players ever!

When I bought mine I had a choice between the stereo and the mono and I chose the stereo version it had a wide open sound that I couldn't resist. Either way you can't go wrong with the music. It brings a smile to my face every time I listen. But I have some history with this musical.

I don't have this and have never heard it, but if I saw a copy the lovely cover would almost certainly make me buy it. I love Manne with Bill Evans (on EMPATHY, I think it is), but my favourite is almost certainly Sonny Rollins' WAY OUT WEST -- I think Cook and Morton describe his drumming on that as "unfailingly hip", and damn they're right!

I don't have this and have never heard it, but if I saw a copy the lovely cover would almost certainly make me buy it. I love Manne with Bill Evans (on EMPATHY, I think it is), but my favourite is almost certainly Sonny Rollins' WAY OUT WEST -- I think Cook and Morton describe his drumming on that as "unfailingly hip", and damn they're right! I also appreciate Cook & Morton's assessment of Shelly's drumming with Ornette: "[ ... ] an unlikely recruitment on the face of it, but absolutely bang up to the moment." He was as efficient with Ornette as he was with Henry Mancini! My own personal favourite, however, is his 1954 date with Lennie Niehaus ("The Quintet", Contemporary C 2513). Roy DuNann, one overhead AKG microphone, and a sound that's absolutely hair-raising ...

indeed, manne did a fabulous job with ornette. i hadn't paid attention to the lineup in years, and after getting more familiar with some of his stuff, i was amazed that he was also THAT drummer. what a player.
i have seen NM mono originals of this "my fair lady" album for about $10 at the most on a few occasions. it was apparently wildly popular. i never took it seriously because of all the copycat albums they then made. peter gunn, bells are ringing, lil abner, and about 2394502347 others. i do have files of it. perhaps i will give it a listen tonight. i have been too hasty with judgement in the past, i'll admit. so let's see what happens!

These tracks are part of the later C 3518 (12" LP), which adds a 1956 session with Hampton Hawes and Stu Williamson. But I feel that the 8 original tracks with just 3 reed, bass, and drums are better. That's why I mentioned the 10" LP in the first place.

I'm considering the original mono pressing of this album, anyone have any experience? I'm just rereading producer Joe Boyd's memoir WHITEBYCYCLES. He worked (fairly briefly, I think) for Lester Koenig at Contemporary and he mentions this record. He says it sold a quarter of a million copies "and made a success of Contemporary". SaveSaveSaveSave

It's a widely available record, cheap in great condition. The original mono sounds AMAZING. One of the best-sounding LPs I've ever heard. Truly, it's completely fantastic. Not the favorite music - it's perfectly nice, just not all that interesting. But the sound - wow!!!
