I was listening to the last track of Horace Silver's "Horace-Scope" recently (Nica's Dream), through headphones and via mp3 on my iPod at work, and I heard an annoying squeak. Faint, but audible. It was perfectly in time with the music, and so I wondered if I could hear it on the record, which I am fortunate enough to have an original of. Sure enough, it is there. It is especially noticeable between 1:30-2:00. I can only surmise that it is a hi-hat pedal in need of oiling. Does anyone else hear this, either on the record or in a digital file? I hope I am not going crazy.

I'll have to check it out later. While we're on the topic, I was certain this thread was going to be about Lee Morgan's "Candy" on the album of the same title...glaring squeaky hi-hat on that track via Art Taylor. It is less apparent in the mono version, however.

Just listened to the stereo version--on YouTube, on earbuds, on the train, mind you, though it did sound 'full resolution' to me. Anyway, I may have heard something extremely faint around 1:30-1:45 but I may have very well been imagining it. In comparison to the squeak on "Candy", this is nothing, if it is in fact anything at all. *shrug*

By the way: Rudy was on that day. The tom-toms sound especially big and profound! I used to have an original mono pressing of this, deep groove and all. The guy wanted 200 for it(!). The cover was in good shape (gorgeous cover btw) and the labels were clean but the vinyl was prwtty beat. So I offered him $50 and he took it (I think my expertise made an impression). But when I got it home it ended up sounding worn down so I sold it for a very small profit.

I was also expecting this to be about Candy. I'll have to go back and listen to them both and compare what I hear.

yeah, candy is bad. i don't have an original of course, but i have heard the recording. i had forgotten about that, though, so it is nice to know this is a thing on some recordings. it is MUCH more subtle on 'horace-scope'.
