Not long ago I found the Eric Dolphy “Last Date” album on the American Limelight label (recorded in Hilversum, Holland, in 1964) without knowing very much about the Limelight labelography or the concert itself. I soon realized that the pink/green label on my copy was not the first. There is an earlier Limelight issue with the black/green and white/silver print deep groove label which comes in a gatefold cover including an 8 page booklet. That’s the one to go for, I thought. But since it’s a Dutch concert with local musicians, maybe the first release is the Dutch Fontana (usually insanely expensive). Life is never easy, is it?
So, I guess my Limelight will have to do for now, but for future collecting considerations:
1. On what label was this concert released first? 2. If it was the Fontana label – which label is the first (I have seen both black and blue labels with silver print)? 3. Is the concert best heard in mono or stereo?

Thanks gst! I haven't looked through the Gallery section yet but I sure will. I am also eager to hear a mono pressing of this album. Sounds promising.

It's the mono you want. The stereo mix is a 'simulated' duo-phonic stereo from the mono mix.

I need to keep an eye out for this. Earlier this week I watched all the footage from the Mingus in Europe tour in 64 and Dolphy is every much the star in the performances. I'd like to hear this "Last Date", even though it wasn't his actual last performance.
