After finally finding the two albums by this short lived group (Vol. 1 Sonet SLP 36 and Vol. 2 Sonet SLP 51) in great condition I am a bit confused. The Vol. 1 is in mono but the Vol. 2 is in stereo. There is nothing whatsoever on the cover or the label indicating "Stereo" or "Mono" or even "High Fidelity" or anything else, but the Vol. 2 is still in stereo, and real stereo too! Since both records were recorded on the same occasion (November 1963) they should both be in stereo I guess. Does anybody know if the Vol.1 original exists in stereo? All input appreciated!

hi Mats, wellcome on board, in the narrow circle of Free jazz lovers. I've got both records, on Swedish Sonet label. maybe I'm getting deaf but I can't be sure: in some passages it seems stereo, not a good one, in others mono. now, look at the etchings: Sonet SLP 36: dead wax, SLP NY 1 A and SLP NY 1 B Sonet SLP 51: dead wax, ST-06 51-A and ST-06 51-B 51 bears the suffix ST while 36 SLP: does it mean that a stereo recording was made? and for vol.2 only? I've never had reissues so I can't check. now a question for you. my first pair had a soft cover, opening in the usual right side. then I bought Vol. 1 with a very hard cover, opening in the upper side. I've never seen Vol. 2 with the same hard cover. what about yours?

Thanks for your input dottorjazz! Yes, the run out machine stamped etchings are the same on my copies with the ST meaning stereo. And I have not heard any reissues either so I can't tell. I have listened to my copies with headphones and the mono-/stereo-perspective is very distinct. Quite good stereo too. If you listen from Spotify it's the stereo version too. So maybe the early original of Vol. 1 was released in mono only. I don't know how far between the releases (36 and 51) are. So, probably, the whole concert was recorded in stereo but for some reason only Vol. 2 was released in stereo. That's my theory anyway.
Concerning the covers, the very first issue of Vol. 1 was released with the top loaded, heavy cardboard cover รก la Folkways with the front cover picture glued on to it. As far as I know the Vol. 2 was never released in this fashion. My copies are traditional soft, laminated flipback sleeves. The heavy cover you have are very rare, hard to find and usually very expensive (a dealer in Stockholm is selling one for circa $400). But the pressings are the same.
