Depending on how this goes I may post more covers, but this one got me thinking. This one came to my attention by way of Jazz Collector (http://jazzcollector.com/blue-note/a-little-hope-and-hipp-for-today/). The sellers grading is as follows, "Sleeve: NM-, with a small piece of tape reside visible in the upper left corner of the black front, and some minor wear on the bottom seam. The cover picture of Jutta herself is wonderful, no ringwear, no discoloration, and the back in wholly unmarked." So how would you grade it? Attachment Deleted

When I see NM- I just assume VG++. I think it's the seller's attempt to acknowledge it's not quite NM without the consequent loss of value of writing VG++. Personally I wouldn't complain if I received that piece and it had been graded NM-, though I'm not really a stickler for covers, so long as there's no (undisclosed) ringwear.

I'd say it's borderline strong VG+ or VG++. As long as there's good pictures like that though, the cover grading really only serves to give me a sense of how conservative or liberal a seller grades. A VG++ on that cover would make me think the seller is a slightly liberal grader--par for the course when it comes to buying records on eBay. I'd grade it a strong VG+, partly because I don't sell records to keep the lights on, but also because I believe that conservative grading reaps more rewards in the long run.

I just looked at it again close up. I agree VG++ is too generous.

Tape could be removable.

As there is tape, you would assume there's a split. There also quite a lot of wear on the bottom seam. Otherwise it looks relatively ok. Maybe it seems that it should be more wear to be a VG, I don't know. But it's absolutely not cleaner than a weak VG+. I would grade it VG, to be conservative. Grading is such a subjective matter, so all the grading scales in the world won't get everyone on the same page. Also, if there are no images of all seams, closeups of everything, then it's hard to know for sure until it's in your hands.

It looks more like tape residue to me. Aside from that, the small amount of defacing at the front bottom, and the lower front right corner, the thing actually looks VG++ to me...very clean looking front and back overall.

Great date too, by the way. The digital version I have has audible tape issues so an original would be sweet.

I was originally leaning towards VG++, but if I were to sell this I would probably list it as VG+. For those of you who voted for VG do you buy records on EBay? What percentage of records do you end up returning?

A hint of ringwear at the top, near her hair, wear on the right bottom corner. What's in the middle part, bottom, Just under her wrists ? And tape residue. And only zooming in on an iPad. I'd say VG, maybe + And this from a guy who buys a lot of records in thrift stores :-)
For myself I couldn't care less, and I would buy it right away, at a reasonable price. If the word "mint" comes up , near or otherwise, and top dollar is asked it must be, euh, well ... mint
ps, sorry about the lame guestname. I did register but there is some delay in the activation.

It certainly isn't NM. It's somewhere between VG+ and VG++, I suppose. It depends on how long the seam splits are. If no bigger than the 1cm or so the photograph suggests, then VG++.
