here's the second who has missed something. Mode is a nice looking label, with some nice records. lovely portraits on cover, some ugly ones. some time ago, loving West Coast music, I began collecting Mode. there are several singers, I tried them but sold them all: Joy Bryan, Clora Bryant, Lucy Ann Polk, Joanne Grauer, Johnny Holiday and Doris Drew. very, very light background music, no interest at all. some instrumentals I didn't like: Paul Togawa, Bernie Nerow, Al Viola. the good ones are: Herbie Harper, Stan Levey, Richie Kamuca, Mel Lewis, Frank Rosolino, Conte candoli, Pepper Adams, Eddie Costa and Warne Marsh. I've got some others, Marty Paich, Buddy Collette, Harry Babasin but are less interesting. I think you wrote to want them all: I wanted too but gave up.

yes, dott, the vocalists are horrid, but i do rather enjoy complete discographies. having chased the clora bryant for awhile, i can safely say that the few tracks without vocals are quite nifty. though that record may have been the most disappointing of all. i was led by the packaging and lineup info to believe it was a standard quartet date. should have read all the liner notes!
and the pepper adams is glorious. most of the non-vocal dates are. i like the al viola, but it certainly isn't the typical jazz record, that's for sure.

also, if you get out all the portraits up to number 109 and lay them in a row, it looks like the wall in a college economics department! haha.

Just listened to some clips on youtube and I have no idea why that Doris Drew album would go for so much...must be others trying to complete their Mode collection On a brighter note I guess there's another label I'll have to keep an eye out for.

the thing is, top prices for the very best mode records even out around $100 with just this one album as an exception. it frustrates me so much. it isn't rare. i see copies about every month or two on ebay. if i know what is causing this, i can work around it. and as you pointed out, it isn't even that good! argh!
