Anyone have any experience with dealers selling fakes/counterfeits as originals? I’ve seen listings on eBay that claim a particular repressing is an original/first pressing, but not an actual dealer trying to replicate an original. As has been pointed out numerous times just how often “rare” albums like 1568 show up for sale on eBay, and it got me wondering if anyone is replicating these things. Perhaps this isn’t as big an issue in Jazz as it is with other genres? For instance (although I would assume creating an acetate would be easier as it wouldn’t include the album cover): recordmecca.com/news/fake-acetates/

There was a discussion about what looked like deep grooves being "cut into" a record a few months back on Jazz Collector, and I admit they were sloppy crooked deep grooves, but I am dumbfounded as to how the seller would have gotten the white label but into the deep grooves. Some deep grooves have ripped labels. Some don't. Neither ever bothered me much.
This doesn't seem to be as much of an issue for us, especially since acetates and whatnot are not our main fare. Although fakes of "Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm section" are known. I believe LJC has talked about it a bit.

After all there are a lot more easier (newer) album people could fake.

Gregory - I remember that listing. I recall that the person also tried to change the etchings on the run out groove but it was obvious the vinyl was a later repressing that someone tried to pass off (very amateurishly I might add) as a first pressing by sloppily cutting in grooves in the label. I think it was a copy of Peckin' Time if memory serves me but I can't be sure about that.

jrock, it seemed like an obvious fake to me, too, but i HAVE to know how the seller got the white label paper back into the grooves after they were cut! any thoughts?

My guess is some really careful white paint of some sort or liquid paper. It was really strange looking if I recall. Pretty pitiful attempt!
