Got my hands on a copy of Dolphy's "Far Cry" however the front cover is textured (see photo below). I have other New Jazz albums of the same time period, but they all have smooth non lamented cover. Anyone have any info on this? Attachment Deleted

It's a great record but I don't have a clue about cover variants on originals... My copy is a rather nasty late-80s repress and doesn't get much play because of this... I'd like to improve on it.

Looks like the texture cover may be a first pressing, but who knows. Either way it is a great record. I've listened to it numerous times on Spotify, but the record sounds so much better (my copy isn't even noisy like so many of the New Jazz titles tend to be). I'd now put it right up there with any other Dolphy album (well perhaps right below "Out to Lunch").

I believe textured covers are linked to first edition. Among mine, ALL of the following have textured covers and ALL have the same front cover design with colored band under the photo. I don't know if other exist with these two features. Eric Dolphy 8270 Far Cry Ron Carter 8265, Where? Steve Lacy 8271, Evidence Yusef Lateef 8278, Into Something Mal Waldron 8269, The Quest

I believe it's the only other album I own that has that cover design with the colored band. I know my version of "Looking Ahead" isn't textured, but that's a slightly different design. Are all of the records you have deep groove as well? I'm sure I've missed some, but these are albums with the same cover design (note not all of these are first pressing of the album): Larry Young – Young Blues - NJ 8264 (1960) Jackie McLean – Lights Out - NJ 8263 (1961) Ron Carter – Where? - NJ 8265 (1961) Ahmed Abdul-Malik – The Music Of Ahmed Abdul-Malik - NJ-8266 (1961) Walt Dickerson – A Sense Of Direction - NJ 8268 (1961) Yusef Lateef – Into Something - NJ 8272 (1961) Roland Alexander – Pleasure Bent - NJ 8267 (1962) Mal Waldron – The Quest - NJ 8269 (1962) Eric Dolphy – Far Cry - NJ 8270 (1962) Steve Lacy – Evidence - NJ 8271 (1962) Dizzy Reece – Asia Minor - NJ 8274 (1962) Curtis Fuller – Curtis Fuller With Red Garland - NJ 8277 (1962) Zoot Sims – Good Old Zoot - NJ 8280 (1963) Art Farmer – Work Of Art - NJ 8278 (1965)

Side note Dott, how do you like Ron Carter's "Where?" I've been thinking about searching down a copy based on Mal and Eric being on the record.

I must correct myself re Waldron The Quest: my cover isn't textured and not laminated. All cited New Jazz are double sided DG. If Trane is my god, Eric is his brother, so I'm in love with (almost) everything he played. If I'm not wrong, Carter had just picked up a cello and he couldn't be accustomed nor trained to this instrument. In fact his playing is not more than a different color, his solos are weak. Eric rules. Attachment DeletedAttachment Deleted

Looks like "The Quest" was textured as well per a few popsike listings.

i had always thought ron had been a cellist in his younger days, and picked up jazz and the bass because black musicians couldn't find classical work. am i wrong about this? i admit i have no idea where i heard it.
i rather like his cello playing on "out there", very much so.

wikipedia has confirmed it.
i thought i was wrong! doug watkins DID do that, however, for his New Jazz album, "Soulnik", which is pliant and fun, but smacks of amatuerism... perhaps by design? who knows.
my copy has so much background noise that I can't bear to play it. would love to upgrade.
