Don't want to step on LJC's toes, but I'll be in London in a couple of weeks and was wondering if anyone has suggestions on where to go. My wife will be in a conference for a couple of days so I've got all day to dig

Surprised none of my fellow Brits have responded on this one. The truth is that London is a shadow of its former self for jazz record shopping. The famed Mole Jazz is long closed and my recent visit to Foyles bookshop confirmed that Rays is a hugely disappointing shadow of its former glory.
A few places you might try then...
Sounds of the Universe in Soho. Honest Jon's near Ladbrook Grove tube station Going "South of the river", there's Soul Brother just on the corner near East Putney tube station.

Thanks for the recommendations. I went to Soul Brothers, but apparently someone cleaned them out of all of their US originals last week. LJC hearing my footsteps perhaps? They were really nice though. Pulled out a bunch of stuff from the back, but it wasn't anything I was interested in. Also went to High nest Jon's, but struck out there as well. I was surprised to see so many stores that removed the album from the cover (even new albums). Perhaps because of lack of room? Or theft?

Sadly I suspect risk of theft is the reason. Not only do the shops keep the vinyl safely behind the counter but they've also taken to keeping many of the more valuable covers behind the counter and putting our photocopies in the racks. These days people steal the covers as trophies to frame and hang on their walls.

this is a thing everywhere, i fear. the jazz record center has fairly respectable clientele, but even fred keeps the more valuable records in poly sleeves behind the counter to avoid damage in slippery hands. lots of record stores i frequent, in fact all of them that come to mind, also do this. some, such as the princeton record exchange, take the covers for 100$+ records and photocopy them and put placeholders in the bins, as you say. i'd honestly rather they did that. too many records and covers get damaged and put back by foolish or dishonest patrons. i saw a guy drop an NM- NYC copy of yusef lateef on prestige and it hit the counter and flipped many times before landing on the floor. totally ruined. scratched to hell and back. then he was FURIOUS that he had to pay for it. and i was going to buy it if he didn't. i don't know if i believe this, but sometimes it's totally out of your hands: a friend from CA told me that once he was playing a lexington copy of "fabulous fats vol 1" and a small earthquake was enough to jog the needle and scratch his record horribly. a tall tale if you ask me, but scary nonetheless!
