yesterday I received a record, nice shape but a label bore an old, large, badly detached sticker: awful. the previous owner tried to peel it off without good results. I thought: leave it this way or try to restore it? 1) BEFORE: what record is this? 2) SCIENTIFIC TOOLS NEEDED: less than 20 minutes cautious work. 3) FINAL RESULT: ah, Miles Davis, in perfect shape. and now I'm pleased, gonna have a listen.

Nice work, Dottor!
I have sometimes done some modest cleaning work on laminated covers using cotton buds and isopropyl alcohol to remove writing and the build up of dirt. But removing a sticker like this from a label requires a lot of patience.

Nicely done, Dott -- patience is rewarded. I often make good marks, stickers and other damage to covers but I'm not sure I would have thought to remove sticker residue from a label. Maybe I would. With covers I find that furniture polish works very well indeed in removing general grubbiness and sticker / tape residue, but I never repair selves using tape. If the cover is split I usually just put it in a poly sleeve with the record separate so that the sleeve need never be disturbed again. I always feel that arresting any further damage is generally better than trying too repair what has already taken place. However, if the split is due simply to the folded seam coming unstuck, then I do use double-sided sticky tape laid on the inside edge to reseal the sleeve.
Apart from this, my only other -- but ever present -- aid is my trusty Moth record cleaning machine, which is about twelve years old now. That I could *never* do without...

on a laminated cover, as long as you are sure not to get it on the actual cardboard anywhere, rubbing alcohol is the PERFECT cleaning agent for just about anything. pen, marker, general dirt, sticker residue, tape, etc. i swear by it.
