Hi, all!
Trying to decide between a:
Teac TN-300 (new) Pioneer PL 12-D Rega Planar 3 (used) and maybe an vintage Thorens I saw at a local record shop.
I currently have a Technics SL-2000 and a SL-DL1...they are nice but I am way over them and itching to upgrade. My SL-DL1 can't handle the high registers of Morgan's beautiful playing :-)
I don't have a fortune but I want to get the best I can for my money (400 USD). Thanks!!

Well I only have experience of one of the turntable brands you mention and that's Rega. I am an extremely happy owner of a Rega RP6 turntable/Exact cartridge combination. If that's anything to go by then the lower end of the Rega range is certainly worth considering at your budget - either in the form of a used Planar 3 or a new RP1 (possibly slightly above your budget but I'm in the UK and not sure of US prices).
What ever way you go, the best piece of advice I can give you is to audition the turntables with some music you know well and trust your own ears.

The lower end Pro-Ject turntables might also be within your budget, although like Martin I'm not sure of US prices nor US availability for that matter. The Pro-Ject Essential -- which has been extremely well reviewed over the years -- would cost just over $400, assuming no price hikes or import duties. www.henleydesigns.co.uk/essential2-p1247 I've used an even more basic Pro-Ject that the Essential very happily for fifteen years now and while I am thinking of upgrading, there is no real need to -- the deck still functions perfectly.

Go for a VPI Traveler or Classic 1 depending on your budget. Pair it with Dynavector 20X2 cartridge and you will be in analog heaven!

jazzonwax, did you ever take spender's advice? i know very little about the numbers and gear, and would be interested to hear how it went for you.
