Just when I had begun to despair of “British” jazz, I found this chap - why didn’t I know of this before? Here is Nat playing tenor with a quartet. Doom Girl recently posted Nat’s complete album of AFRO COLTRANE on the Coltrane - Blue Trane: The Complete Masters thread. On that album he also plays soprano sax and bass clarinet, channeling not only Coltrane but also Dolphy. I also detect a mellowing Charles Lloyd-like strain to much of his work, especially on this Low Four Studio session. I suppose some might consider Nat a facile mimic, but I find his music to be enjoyable nonetheless - he seems to me to play with passion, heart, soul and respect - and with a very fine tenor tone to boot. "The Low Four Studio" - a place where old white dudes keep classic jazz alive and well in Manchester?
