So, JAZZ makes it to the eighth line down, in the smaller type - well above Megan Thee Stallion and Neil Gallagher's High Flying Birds.....but far, far below Amyl and the Snifters. Haha, see ya at Glastonbury! Another way to look at it is, McCartney is the main headliner; Saturday night on the Pyramid Stage. On that poster, McCartney's name is pink. Herbie's is the same colour. 😉 |

I'm going to see Herbie supported by the excellent Alfa Mist this July in Madrid. Can't wait to see a surviving member of Miles' 2nd great Quintet I know
Herbie's Blue Note output very well too but apart from Rockit know nothing of his music from the 70's, 80's and beyond any recommendations?

MWANDISHI and (unexpectedly) FAT ALBERT ROTUNDA, the funky music that began life as background for a children’s TV show, are both terrific records. The first is as adventurous and as abstract as anything that Miles committed to record during his Bitches Brew period; FAT ALBERT ROTUNDA is simply hugely enjoyable. The only other two recordings I have are SEXTANT and CROSSINGS and I listened to both last weekend and was reminded that they both suffer the same fault — less compelling second sides and a feeling that they are a little padded out. From memory, I think both first sides are strong and essential. I think it's SEXTANT that has what I can only describe as sounding like jazz kazoos on the second side. I don’t know anything of Herbie’s post-Blue Note output beyond these, I’m afraid. |

Good to see so many younger people enjoying Hancock's tunes from his Blue Note period. I walked out of his performance a few years back at the Nice Jazz Festival, when he launched into his "Imagine" Project, ghastly. He had been seduced by becoming a celebrity among the the Pop Glitterati, recording with Lady Gaga or whoever. Maiden Voyage remains the triumph of his catalogue.
