I've inherited a 5 record set of 78rpm shellacs titled "The History of Jazz". It consists of a series of narrations by Rex Harris (not the film star version!) interspersed by musical illustrations played by Mick Mulligan's Magnolia Jazz Band. The label is TEMPO in a pale green colour script. There is a number MM601, but no date of release. The 10 sides are titled:- 1 - Introduction: Origins 2 - Early Social Influences 3 - Spirituals: Work Songs: Blues 4 - Ragtime: Spasm Bands 5 - Brass Bands: Analysis of Jazz Band Instrumentation 6 - The Nature of Jazz 7 - Exodus from New Orleans 8 - Advent of Swing 9 - Digression 10 - Jazz: A Folk Music
I've tried to find out anything about the collection but any sites quoting TEMPO releases don't seem to make any mention. I'd like to know more about the set, such things as it's release year, it's position in the jazz canon and it's rarity (or commonality). Just to find any more info would be helpful. I know Rex Harris wrote a book called "The Story of Jazz" and that apparently he hated any jazz after the 1930's (according to him Duke Ellington was a hack!).
If you knowledge of this or know of any contact points I can approach I'd be grateful.
Thanks. Vinylpete.
