Hello fellow Jazz fans
We've had the absolute joy of getting an amazing jazz collection come through our record shop in Dorchester, Dorset.
It includes A Love Supreme and Impressions by John Coltrane, original mono editions.
We would totally love to keep these as the joy of listening to them is beyond describable...but they could also generate some much needed cash flow in these difficult times.
I hope you don't mind me asking this (and please say if it's not appropriate here as I am a new member), I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on where we might find potential buyers for these. We'd love them to be looked after and enjoyed as they deserve and also get a fair price to help our business survive.
Any advice and wisdom will be gratefully received. Thank you so much x

I suppose your regular customers are not jazz fans? Nice Coltrane records should sell right away!

Some are and we do have a good jazz section. We've let our regulars know that we've got some gems in our possession. For these two however, we wanted to cast the net a bit further afield to raise some much needed funds if that makes sense 😊

You need cash, people out there need records. Can I suggest you prepare a detailed inventory of your whole jazz selection - I have seen people compile a set of links to the Discogs entry for each edition (for example, is the Coltrane the UK or US edition?) You will need to grade the vinyl and cover and be brave and set an offer price. Invite people to email you to request a copy. Alan at JazzHouseRecords in lock-down Leicester operates a similar mail order sevice, on a much larger scale, maybe steal some ideas from here: www.jazzhouserecords.co.uk/ Good luck, we need all we can get.

Thank you so much, that's good advice. We've ventured into the world of Discogs selling which is also working well. Some of the items in the collection feel and sound quite special, we're not in a hurry necessarily to sell it all. But thought we could do a few at a time to help keep us ticking over when we're closed. Plus, we're having the most amazing weekend just marveling at what we're hearing and seeing, it truly does feel like an honour.

Hey, LJC! JazzHouseRecords sell cds!!! Only joking! I don't give a crap anymore about format. I've been down that road. I just want to hear the music. All of it! @helenindorset all the best!

Hello Helen,
Congratulations on unearthing this collection. It sounds like you've had a pleasurable weekend of exploration! I think I would describe myself as a potential buyer for the mono A Love Supreme - depending on condition, price, provenance etc. Our esteemed host, LJC is wise in suggesting that you compile a detailed inventory and I'd certainly be interested in seeing that. For what it's worth, I'm only one county North of you in Wiltshire, so that could (subject to Covid restrictions) make some of the arrangements easier.
Good luck which ever way you decide to go and please feel free to DM me.
Best wishes, Martin

It's a collection that came in from a customer, it was his Step Father's collection and the family wanted it to be loved and enjoyed again. It has clearly been listened to and enjoyed, and certainly isn't mint but the vinyl we've listened to on the whole plays brilliantly.
They said he visited London Jazz Clubs so that peaked our interest...and we feel truly honoured to be touching and listening to some of these titles (eg Blue Note mono originals sounding so sweet).
We're not in too much of a hurry to part with them as we'd like to continue enjoying spending time with them ourselves. I'm sure you understand 😊 But equally, we want to share the love around and not be greedy and we might need to raise some funds to see our small independent Record Shop through these times.
There are worse quandaries to have in life...
