Hiya, long time record collector getting into Jazz 78's.
I've collected folk and blues on 78 for some years, but I recently stumbled on an unusual disc in the form of an autographed 1939 Coleman Hawkins disc.
I get the feeling it may be fairly unusual to find an autographed disc of this vintage, and wonder if it might not be better placed with a collector who can truly appreciate it. Does anyone have any idea where I could get the disc appraised?
In addition, I'd love to know where to start with early jazz LP's, as I've always found the complexity of different pressings to be complicated.
Here to learn!

Hi Jon. I collect signed first editions and the first thing I would do - if you haven't done it already - is type "Coleman Hawkins' autograph" in Google and then go to Google Images. You'll see numerous examples of Coleman's autograph there and can compare to your item, to check for authenticity, although you might still want an expert opinion. He had a very distinctive way of writing his "k." Several of the items are priced and you might get some idea of value and how to find some leads on who might be interested in your item.

Thanks, I did attempt this and it's undoubtedly his writing, but I've yet to spot a priced example, if you could point me at one that would be wonderful.

I wouldn't trust any signed item on ebay. which is why I also said ....go to Google Images. You'll see numerous examples of Coleman's autograph there and can compare to your item, to check for authenticity, although you might still want an expert opinion.

That apparent Stephen King forgery is an interesting example JH. The flourish coming out of the last letter in the first name, and the capital 'K' look very much like a genuine King signature, but as you say the 'p' and 'h' of Stephen seem to be missing. How could a forger make such a stupid and obvious mistake?? I think this could possibly be a case where the author was exhausted from signing - I've seen many instances of "slurred" signatures - or perhaps he is signing 'Steve" although he certainly didn't usually sign that way. I certainly wouldn't buy it though!

I certainly wouldn't buy it though! I can't see why King would sign an autograph without the lowercase p and h. Maybe, and I've looked into this, but maybe he really spells it Steven. I can't find anything to corroborate that, but maybe?? I can't see fatigue being a factor. We'd see a lot more books signed that way. The price was pretty low on that signed book too. He has an Hard Case Crime novel out in March called Later. A limited amount of signed, numbered copies, 374, were available to purchase. Some people have put their preorders up on ebay. One sold for $1,295. www.ebay.com/itm/LATER-Stephen-King-2021-Signed-Numbered-Limited-Edition-Pre-Sale/274598578149?hash=item3fef59c7e5:g:BBEAAOSwCB5fx8VlAnother has sold for $1,326: www.ebay.com/itm/Signed-limited-edition-of-LATER-by-Stephen-King-374-copy-ed-Titan-Books/203203773591?hash=item2f4fe38497:g:d7oAAOSwi9ZfxX1-
