Does anyone know what the letters 'REI' are after a matrix number? I have a copy of Ben Webster's Soulville, Verve Trumpeter label, and it looks like an original but it's so perfect that it got me looking. The entire number on side A reads MGV 8274-A REI 50608.

I think there's something wrong: once I owned that record but sold it so I can't check now. I've checked other Verve from the same period so you can see how they look. please click to enlarge. there's a five digit number under cat #, but no trace of letters A-REI (a reissue?) Attachment Deleted

The REI is etched in the runout after the normal matrix number. Pretty strange. Anyway thanks! And I love your Blue Note Guide!!!

I checked all my Verve trumpet label: all have cat # etched and the five digit # which is on the label, as yours. couldn't find REI. I'll try with a friend who could have Soulville.

Most of my records are scattered between two locations in boxes as I am moving, but I have a small handful of trumpeter labels. I will check when I get all unpacked. Have you cross-referenced your matrix numbers with discogs? Sometimes people detail the matrix for various pressings there.

I did. There's nothing that matches. There is a repressing with the MGV 8274 but it has additional numbers on the record label and does not have REI on the runout. The listing of the original does not have the matrix numbers listed!

I've got the answer! my friend sent me a picture of the same record as yours, TPT label, first edition pictured is side B, the only obvious difference is the capital B, A on side one. it perfectly matches with yours. where you from lavolpe? looks an italian nick. I'm italian. Attachment Deleted

I actually only know Fred from the shop, so perhaps I used 'friend' a bit loosely, but I always enjoy talking to him, and not just about jazz records. I'll probably go in next week. Well, thank you again for solving my question! The seller was also very happy to hear that I wasn't returning it.
