I'm not an Impulse completist so I can relate on records in my collection only. John Coltrane, Coltrane Impulse A 21 has Van Gelder all other higher numbers bear Van Gelder. John Coltrane Live at the Village Vanguard Impulse A 10: RVG John Coltrane Africa/Brass Impulse A 6: RVG Gil Evans Into the Hot Impulse A 9: RVG the change from RVG to Van Gelder is to find between A 11 and A 20. maybe GTF or GST can help. no RVG or Van Gelder on Oliver Nelson The Blues and the Abstract Truth, Impulse A 5, and Max Roach Percussion Bitter Sweet Impulse A 8

Thanks Dottore! Much appreciated. A-5 should have RVG, that I’m sure of. I’m diving into the Impulse catalogue for real now. Have a few originals in my sight...

van gelder is not known to have ever made new masters during the orange label run, so it should not be possible to find otherwise indistinguishable pressing with different van gelder stamps.

Thanks Greg! So that means whatever stamp is on there is the first/only one. I love when it’s easy like that...

yes, there are a few that appear with bell sound. i treat van gelder as first, but it is not an easy thing.

I might be able to narrow down the range a little. My second pressing (labels have the ABC-PARAMOUNT RECORDS, INC wording rather than the A PRODUCT OF AM-PAR RECORD CORP wording) of A-18 (McCoy Tyner - Inception) has the VAN GELDER stamp.

Thanks Martin and Mats. There seems to be no logic which stamp was used when. My copy of A-33, WLP has the VAN GELDER stamp and just as Mats copy of A-35 mine also has the RVG stamp. So there's no clear line when the switch was made. So Dottore, it seems that the RVG stamp is still present after A-21, at least up to A-35. The RVG stamp on A-35 is much smaller than the RVG stamp found on earlier titles.

I can check more if you need.

Thanks GST. I guess when all the other attributes are there for a first pressing, then which ever stamp is on there is the correct one.

Typically RVG was used on the early monos and stereos had both Van Gelder and Stereo stamped. Then the stereo stamp vanished and it was just Van Gelder
