Hi there, I just picked the Phillips monaural recording of the Dolginger Jazz Quartet "Dig". What can folks tell me about this band? M Klaus Doldinger - DOLDINGER - is one of Germany's most successful writers of TV and movie music, and a great jazz musician too. His first quartet LP "Dig Doldinger" has always been one of my favourite jazz records. Here is the original DOWN BEAT review from August 27, 1964 (not available web-wise): Rating: **** >> There seems to be an endless parade of saxophone-organ units. Most lumber along with the saxophone bleating, blaring, or bellowing over a sanguine, heavy organ, and adequate bass, and a superfluous drummer who only can be heard in the cracks of the sound. Of this batch, Herr Doldinger certainly holds a respectable edge. This album is an impressive introduction to a young German tenor player who seems to have chosen the right people to study. Still his work is remarkably free of the current clichés, and only time will tell whether he has formed too many of his own. He leans heavily on early Sonny Rollins and Ben Webster for phrasing and guidance. But it is Thelonious Monk who seems to have influenced his writing and harmonic development. Doldinger's trio is an extremely tight and well-knit organization. Hoffman has at least two distinct approaches to the organ, one varied an pianistic, the other the same plodding, heavy organ approach that plagues his American counterparts. << My personal favourites are "Blues For George" which, in contrast to your regular Blue Note tenor plus organ "blues" sessions, has a more sophisticated, and very appealing, harmonic structure, and "Solar", by Chuck Wayne (and later stolen by Miles, of course). BTW, the Rollins and Webster influences referred to - well, maybe they exist. But I doubt if Monk's influence on D. was so substantial.
