Pictures on the covers of several CTI/Kudu LPs credited to a certain White Gate. I cannot find any information about this photographer. I only found that Creed Taylor in the very beginning of an interview to Marc Myers (2009) said the following: JazzWax: Where did you grow up? Creed Taylor: My family lived in Bedford, Virginia, a rural town in the middle of the state, about 50 miles from Lynchburg. My grandfather was editor and publisher of The Bedford Democrat, a newspaper he founded. My father started a flourmill in southwestern Virginia, so we moved back and forth between Bedford and a hamlet west of Roanoke called White Gate.
So my current guess is that “White Gate” could be a pseudonym Pete Turner used sometimes due to whatever reasons. I would be happy to get any confirmation or confutation of the supposition.
Thank you.

I know nothing about this, but even before I read your full post, I said to myself "White Gate is absolutely a pseudonym". I'm intrigued now. I hope others can offer some info!
Also, welcome to the board!

I'm afraid the story will remain a mystery. It seems, nobody asked Creed Taylor about it, and Pete Turner (1934-2017) is not with us anymore.

Have you searched the net re this? In less than a minute a search of 'White Gate CTI' took me through to the listing for Usef Lateef's 'Autopsychic' on CTI which credited both Pete Turner (4 liner pics) and White Gate (1 liner pic). A click on White Gate took me on to a Bill O'Connell CTI release where White Gate Art Company was credited with art direction for the sleeve. A click on that listed a further 23 CTI and Kudu releases which credit White Gate Art Company. I'm sure you will be able to find out those associated with WGAC if you continue to dig.

Yes, I know all information you mentioned. It is available in the net (specifically, on discogs). What I don't know is who is White Gate. For instance, on the cover of the second edition of Joe Farrell Quartet LP ( www.discogs.com/Joe-Farrell-Song-Of-The-Wind/release/6152657) there were two photos by White Gate, but not White Gate Art Company (I have both US editions of the LP, CTI 6003 and CTI 6067, with different covers). I think there was no such company in reality.

nicknick did you find out anymore about this?
It's my opinion that White Gate was a name used by one or more of Creed's three sons, who were all involved in art, design, photography in someway.
I plan to cover it on ctproduced.com once I've talked to Creed's son, John Taylor, which should happen in a couple of weeks.

While I have not (yet) spent time digging into White Gate, it would be interesting if you'd found anything except what's posted here. On balance, I don't think it was anything to do with Creed's sons, it started almost before they likely would have. I've asked the Pete Turner archives folks if they know anything. I'm in contact with a film co. that are working on an outline for a biopic on Creed's life, also contributing to a biographers research. No idea if those projects will come to anything, so am posting what I find on ctproduced anyway. ++Mark.

I'm afraid, Mark, the topic still remains a mistery. I didn't manage to find out anymore about a person hidden under the nickname. Thanks a lot for the interest to it. Hopefully, further studies of Creed Taylor's legacy throw light on the riddle. Please keep us informed about any versions.
