Until very recently I'd never really clicked with Bud Powell. You've probably all gone through something similar with other jazz musicians. But a few days ago I sat and listened to Time Waits: The Amazing Bud Powell (Vol. 4) and something just clicked. It was during the track Time Waits that I just stopped. I then listened to that album for over four hours straight. Anyway, if you haven't already, give it a listen www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0B7FAE5D9516A49CIf you've had a similar experience then I'd love to hear about it. We may even hear something new!

Hi jazzhead, To be honest, I prefer Bud's medium and up-tempo pieces to his ballad playing. If "Time Waits" (I mean that particular track) is ever to grow on me, it may be because of Bud's harmonic footprint rather than anything else. Rhythmically, I find this piece rather disappointing. Amazing how such first-rate players as Sam Jones and Philly Joe are completely at a loss here trying to come to terms with Bud's approach. Philly Joe, inventor of low tempo suspense and double time magic - as heard in his contributions to Miles' Prestige recordings - surprisingly plods along here like a dinosaur, without the slightest trace of swing. It's not his fault though. Time to think about the unique, laid-back, genuinely jazzy ballad style of Red Garland!

One of my favorite Bud's and favorite Blue Note's. One I've never had a decent original copy of. The Japanese pressing I bought new around 1981 is getting worn out with some distortion creeping in. I'm hoping that Acoustic Sounds or Music Matters would reissue this (but on 33 RPM).
