Thought I'd start an all-encompassing thread about jazz in film or jazz documentaries. We'll start out with a Woody Shaw documentary which is coming out next year. Also does anyone have information for when "Chasing Trane" will be released on demand?

I look forward to seeing what comes out on this thread. I recently saw three documentaries. The Lee Morgan was fantastic. It was cool getting to see Bennie Maupin and Billy Harper talk about Lee. Then I saw the one on Erroll Garner (I own that one) which was quite good, and lastly I saw one on New Orleans piano player James Booker. Not jazz per se but it was probably my favorite of the three, edging out Lee.
Can't wait to see the Woody Shaw doc. On a bit of a tangent, I got exposed to him by listening to Gordon Vernick's jazz podcasts. These are on iTunes U and some other iTunes related format. There are a lot of them, and they're 15-minute pieces, sometimes in multiple parts, that are incredibly illuminating if you don't know much about them. He had a great set on Woody Shaw. I can't recommend this series highly enough. Has anyone else checked these out? I don't ever recall them mentioned on the jazz blogs.

Watched the Bill Evans doc yesterday online for $4.00. Definitely worth the 2 hours. No holds barred view of his life and music. Not as intriguing as the Lee Morgan doc, but a gifted, complex and troubled man who gave us much through his music.
