I guess Clifford Brown's music is not classified as hard bop. But I feel compelled to write something about him. Yesterday, I put on an evil silver disk: Clifford Brown Memorial Album. It was mastered by RVG and sounded excellent. I was completely overwhelmed by the beauty of his playing. I imagine that the original Blue Note records suffer from the somewhat primitive recording technology of the time. His early death was a great loss. It's hard to believe that a man of his age could make his instrument produce such sweetness and light, using Matthew Arnold's phrase. I've heard it said that if he had lived longer, he would have done better than Miles. Brown's sound was evidently enough to even make the gods envious.

that's the first time i've heard that clifford wasn't a bopper! but i suppose it is a matter of taste. i think he was much better than miles, personally.
