Greetings all -
This is my first post here and I'm hoping someone with more experience can advise about mono cartridge options.
I'm looking for a "true mono" cartridge with which to play '50s & '60s mono jazz albums.
I'm considering the Audio Technica AT3 mono or the AT33 mono. I'd love to have a mono Ortofon SPU but I think that's out of my price range.
For those who have experience with the above cartridges or others you think I should consider from Ortofon or Grado please share your thoughts.
Thanks, in advance, for any advice you can give me.
Markus

I'm pretty sure you found your cart by now but I'll share my story anyway... I've been deep in mono experience for the last 5 years ; mono lps, mono cart, mono phono stage, mono amp (el 84 tubes), one speaker only. As im a kind of dedicated guy, I searched for what Rudy VG had in his control room, no less : the mighty Altec 604C driver...
I luckily found an Altec D (in perfect shape) which is pretty much the same, that i mounted in a bigger enclosure than the wall-suspended Altec NJ cab. A 15" driver enjoys more volume to sing and, being lucky again, i found a Tannoy York angle cabinet copy, made in the late 60s. Then I pushed the walls and gear to let the beast breath and didn't look back for a few good years.
Back to the cart theme. I started cheap with an ortofon OM 25M, compared with AT33 and finally liked how the OM25 sounded in my set-up. Keeping in mind to look up at SPU or Miyajimas but always indulged to spend money on mono lps while i could afford them, rather than a top notch cart that i knew will be still around anytime I finally chose the still affordable (but counting) Denon DL102 mono cart, which was developed for nippon broadcast stations back in the days to play mono AND stereo lps without having to change the cart. Best of both worlds... There's this interesting review about it here www.dagogo.com/denon-dl102-cartridge-review/keep on groovin'
