Coltrane on vinyl, European recordings. BOOTLEGS
as a passionate Trane addict since late 60's, the following group of five records deserves the story behind their acquisition. a friend of mine, still friend after almost 50 years now, collected and traded Jazz records. I knew he had this group of Swedish bootleg recordings and had been asking to buy them for years. he always denied 'cause he loved Trane and especially Dolphy. no way to obtain them in any case or somewhere else. that wild bunch from Sweden had become a nightmare for me.
January 31, 1980, a cold winter rainy day. with two friends we travelled to Turin by car to visit a shop of used vinyl. I came home with 13 records, four by Trane: Cosmic Music and three Savoy with Wilbur Harden. among the others Everywhere by Roswell Rudd and Oliver Nelson More Blues and the Abstract Truth. prices were good, about $ 4 each.got home in the afternoon while snow was beginning to fall. satisfied I began listening. after a while a call for me: “are you interested in -those-records yet?”. my heart accelerated: yessssss, I am. didn’t even ask for the price, rushed in my car and, slowly because of the heavy snow, I went to my friend who lived in the opposite side of Milano. a couple of hours later I inserted all five records in my collection. here they are:
all records come in plain cover, plain label of the same color.
HISTORIC PERFORMANCES HPLP-1, WHITE
Naima, Impressions, My Favorite Things: Stockholm November 23 1961 (second concert, 9.15 PM) quintet with Dolphy, Tyner, Workman and Jones.
Impressions: Stockholm October 22 1963 quartet
HISTORIC PERFORMANCES HPLP-2, GREEN
Mr. PC: Stockholm November 19 1962 (first concert, 7.00 PM) Bye Bye Blackbird, The Inchworm: Stockholm November 19 1962 (second concert, 9.15 PM)
HISTORIC PERFORMANCES HPLP-3, YELLOW
Naima, Traneing In: Stockholm November 19 1962 (first concert) Impressions: Stockholm November 19 1962 (second concert)
HISTORIC PERFORMANCES HPLP-5, RED
Blue Train, Naima, Impressions, My Favorite Things: Stockholm November 23 1961 (first concert, 7.00 PM) quintet with Dolphy, Tyner, Workman and Jones.
HISTORIC PERFORMANCES HPLP-6, ORANGE
Mr. PC, Traneing In, Spiritual, I Want to Talk About You: Stockholm October 22 1963 quartet
the Story of my unofficial Coltrane live vinyl ends here. Trane's too brief path into music gets through his frequent live dates. I never had the opportunity to see him live but his evolution never stopped. he's the first musician I met in Jazz and my best loved after over 50 years. thank's to all for patience.

Cold December 26th 1966 NYC. Day after X-Mas. Little or no publicity. Trane and Ornettes groups at the Village East Theater. Theater half -full. Ornette started the show. He pulled out his tiny plastic horn and blew atonally. Half of the small crowd walked out. Then Trane arrived and the music played. Wow!! What a performance. Never to be forgotten or relived.

I finally dug out my bootleg and I've got HPLP-4 (or at least it's labeled that), I suspect it's the same performances as HPLP-6 as the cover is orange as well. Fidelity is very listenable.
Side One: Mr P.C. (8.15) Traneing In (11.40)
Side two: Spiritual (12.00) I Want to Talk About You (9.40)
John Coltrane - Tenor and Soprano Sax McCoy Tyner - Piano Jimmy Garrison - Bass Elvin Jones - Drums

The YouTuber/Coltrane Research that posted that ^, also posted this: I used to have a Coltrane discography online at www.gavagai.de/musik/HHM4302.htm with a cover image Coltrane live in Stuttgart 1963. In Oct. 2021 I was sued for copyright infringements from a company from Berlin. I removed the cover image. Has anybody had similar experiences or is it just a German nuisance? Has anybody paid the license fee?
