cds: yeah, what i've read online in the past year or so seems to suggest what you have said, and what clifford has said. it rarely happens any more, except with a specific record: the german (original) enja pressing of eric dolphy's "stockholm sessions"... skips all over... i've been through three visually NM copies. possibly a pressing flaw, though it is not always at the same places. as happy as I am with the P1, i would love to be able to lower the anti-skate. i have heard these issues are not present in the P2 and forward, but those are so expensive for what you get. I probably had the RP1 model that came out before yours, because I could set the antiskate. The RP1 is definitely a great TT so I would stick (sorry, pun) to it. A new cartridge such as the Ortofon 2M Red should resolve your problems (and sound way better, too) - records that had several sticks on each side with the carbon played through beautifully when I changed the cart (or played it on another turntable). If you're hesitant to buy a new cart right away, I'd suggest you take a record (the Dolphy) to a Rega dealer and ask him to play the record with any other cart than the Carbon. That's probably the safest bet.

Not a bad idea, cds. the Ortofon 2M Red has been specifically suggested to me many times. It may be time to give it a whirl. Clifford, thanks for the offer. I might take you up on it. but I think i should improve the P1 default cart anyhow. I do have a replacement for it, but that will just be for emergencies, perhaps. does anyone have any experience with installing a new cart on the P1? It seems very straightforward. swapping out the replacement carbon is easy-breezy. I have just begun separating my record selling off into a separate business venture, with the goal being to eventually fund my entire record hobby that way, once I pay off my initial investment. First on the list will be the ortofon 2M red. any piece of audio gear with 5-star ratings on various sites from almost every user has got to be amazing. audio people are the worst.
