The subtleties of of Riverside mono first pressing identification raised its head again recently in the comments on Andy's most recent LJC posting about Ernie Henry's Last Chorus LP.
I think I may have volunteered to co-ordinate a group effort to compile and collate information to construct a guide, so I'm starting this thread to get the ball rolling.
I'm going to suggest that we pool information we have about (potential) Riverside mono first pressings that we have in our collections and the way I'm proposing to do this is to provide a simple Excel spreadsheet template that we can all complete. Before creating this template, I wanted to settle on a sensible list of the the information to collect. So here's my first stab at things I'm going to include in spreadsheet split into XX groups as follows:
1). Core information:
a) Artist
b). LP title
c). Catalogue number
2). Cover information:
a). Front cover design (some records had different covers for later pressings - e.g. Bill Evans' New Jazz Conceptions)
b). Laminated/non-laminated front cover
c). Rear cover address (including number of lines)
d). LPs promoted on rear cover (in order, top to bottom)
3). Label information (for each side)
a). Label design (e.g. blue label with silver text)
b). Label size
c). DG or non-DG
d). Production company name (i.e. "Bill Grauer Productions" with or withont "Inc"
e). Artist font style (italics, bold, roman, capital letters or not)
f). LP title style (italics, bold, roman, capital letters or not)
4). Dead wax information (each side)
a). Matrix number (hand etched or machine stamped)
b). US patent number
c). UK patent number
d). Other dead wax markings
Can anybody think of any other important identifying features that should be included?
I've give this a week or so to capture feedback and then I'll create the first draft of the template.
