Leonard Malone - "More Than You Know": Dexter Gordon i Danmark (Aschehoug, 1996). This beautiful Danish book is a collection of memoirs about Dexter Gordon's life in Denmark. Gordon had been living there since 1962 to 1976, got married to Fenja Louise Holberg who bore him two sons (Marten and Benjamin) and recorded a bunch of albums on Copenhagen label SteepleChase. The book is in Danish with only a small English introduction in the very beginning: This book is dedicated to those who played and to those who listened and to those who asked, and for all those young dreamers who would have played and listened had they been privileged enough to have been a part of that beautiful, wild period.
Editor of the book, Leonard Malone (1936-1998) also wrote a scenario to wonderful documentary film More Than You Know (1996) directed by Don McGlynn:

I really like the photos that were chosen for the cover, unfortunately my French is not good enough to enjoy the book. I'll have to wait for a translated version. A couple of their other great covers:
A couple of years ago French saxophonist Daunik Lazro was playing in Moscow in duo with French pianist Sophie Agnel. Daunik brought another Lenka Lente book: this was a previous book by Gillaume Belhomme - Sales Rectangles (2015) which contained a mini CD with Daunik’s own version of Joe McPhee’s old piece Vieux Carré (on baritone saxophone). The book also contained a story told by Joe McPhee about his very first emotional experience caused by music. McPhee told that the musical experience turned out to be quite traumatic and it occurred when Joe was three years old only. During a big thunderstorm in Florida his family home was stricken by lightning, the fire blazed away and completely destroyed the whole house within a few hours. When Joe and his grandfather came to see the ashes next day, a radio in neighboring home broadcast a song Daddy, I want a diamond ring. Since the event described by McPhee occurred circa 1943, I assume that was either 1941 version of Bob Troup’s song Daddy played by Sammy Kaye Orchestra and Choir or the same year version of the song played by Glenn Miller Orchestra and The Modernaires vocal group. As for the McPhee’s theme Vieux Carré, it was dedicated to ancient French quarter in New Orleans as well as to both Sidney Bechet and Steve Lacy and recorded for the first time on the Graphics (Hat Hut, 1978) LP.
P.S. I tried to recall my own earliest musical experience but with no success:-(

Rafi Zabor (a.k.a. Joel Zaborovsky, a musical journalist and writer from Brooklyn) got PEN/Faulkner Award for his novel The Bear Comes Home (1997). This is a story of a bear playing alto saxophone in jazz clubs of N.Y.C.

So records are like any other lover. They bring out the best in you, making you a superior citizen, lighting your way, serving as life’s benchmark. And they make you into a moronic bore humping massive boxes from one place to the next. We are these two archetypes, we vinyl freaks, for better and for worse (John Corbett).
New review of two recent John Corbett's and Mats Gustafsson's books is HERE.
