Hey all, I just joined the forum last night and read through a bunch of the threads. At a few points there were mini-discussions about LP collecting in Japan and some recommendations for cities and stores. I can't recall where I read them, but since it was of interest to a few members, I thought I'd share this: It's a YouTube vid I found about a store in Kyoto, Japan. It looks about as close to Heaven on Earth as it gets. If I were ever in Japan, I'd make a point of visiting. The shop is called "Hard Bop" it seems.

That was cool. I love Japanese reissues so I'd have a field day in there. And seeing some out-of-reach rare originals is always a treat too. I've never been to Japan but I want to go someday and I will definitely go record shopping.

there is a slim chance i will get to go to okinawa this summer for two weeks for a conference on commutative operator algebra, but i plan to really turn it into a trip on commuting to jazz record stores as much as i can!
however, there are many applicants, and i am low in the pecking order for now.

"Commutative operator algebra": you might as well already be speaking Japanese, GTF

Ah Alun, this is where I have a slight advantage being a mathematics graduate myself. So I have a reasonable idea of what GTF means, though it's 30 years since I last studied algebra. GTF, are you the kind of person who might appreciate this ancient group theorist's joke: what's purple and commutes? An Abelian grape!

Some day I'll make it to Japan. I guess I should start saving now. I see my Stan Getz 10" right there on the wall!

haha, alun, i just wanted to get the "commuting" pun in there, that's all.
and here's the joke. as martin guessed: i know it and love it.
a 'group' is an abstract mathematical idea. the definition is not important for the joke. if a group has the additional property of being 'abelian', we are saying the group 'commutes'. those two terms mean the same thing, but, again, the definition of these terms is not important for the joke. just know that "abelian groups commute" is a true thing. so then a thing that is purple and commutes? an abelian... not group... but grape! it's really rather silly.
martin, rich (dgmono) is also a math student! fun! also, here's another math joke: let epsilon be LESS than zero... ha.

I like the quotation (attributed to somebody other that Erdos) that a mathematician is a machine for turning coffee into theorems. That takes me back... <sigh>. I sometimes wonder if there is a correlation between mathematicians and a liking for jazz.

I'm no mathematician, I do art for a living (acrylic painting, photo realism; digital photo compositing and retouching).
