I was just listening to Sonny Criss' version of Summertime and was comparing it to some of my favorite versions. I particularly like Freddie Hubbard's take on the song found on the album of the same title. With lyrics I like Louis’ and Ella’s version and of course Sam Cooke's.
Anybody else have a favorite version?

miles and Gil on Porgy and Bess - marvellous, marvellous, marvellous... Excellent choice. Definitely in my top 5. I also pulled up this Chet Baker version...not my cup of tea...

Oddly enough, I also found another Chet version done with a guitar trio and taken much slower. Neither have the emotional impact of the Miles/Gils version. And the quartet version you provide a link for seems to merely skate on the surface. If I'm not mistaken these Barclay tracks were recorded in Paris and are also available as Chet Baker Plays Standards...
In fact, I've just found the Criss version. I don't know Criss at all as a player but I have to say, in first hearing, that shrill sax tone doesn't appeal to me at all. Maybe I have been brainwashed by Miles's version with Gil Evans. That has become my "standard"...

And I thought I had another version and indeed last night I found it: Summertime by Stan Getz on West Coast Jazz, recorded appropriately enough in August 1955 with Shelly Manne, Leeoy Vinnegar, Conte Candoli, and Lou Levy. Mine is on a mono Verve Japan repress from, I imagine, the early 80s, although I can't find a date on it to substantiate that. It still isn't quite up there with Miles and Gil but it is very fine.

Hi Alun, Also on Verve, there's another Stan Getz version with Gary Burton playing vibes, recorded in 1964 by Rudy Van Gelder. I don't know if it has ever been released on vinyl, but it is on a CD called "Nobody Else But Me". Very fine music.
