Has anyone else dipped their toes in the water of the Jazz in Britain reissue label? It’s a not-for-profit organisation that issues typically live or radio broadcast recordings of great British jazz from the late 60s and early 70s: jazzinbritain1.bandcamp.comI’ve only bought one but it is the one that most interested me - Revisiting Tanglewood 63: The Early Tapes by Mike Gibbs. Essentially this is an early live radio studio recording of what became the Deram LP Tanglewood. It’s fantastic large ensemble jazz with hints of Gil Evans but inflected throughout by the emerging jazz-rock rhythms of bands from the cusp of the 70s such as Ian Carr’s Nucleus. The recording is remastered from a tape in Mike Gibbs’ archive and the sound quality is superb. If you like British jazz of the Don Rendell, Ian Carr, Joe Harriott, Mike Taylor era then this won’t disappoint. From the joyous, rocking big band rumpus of Tanglewood, Five for England and Fanfare ( a suite of sorts that takes up side one) to the shimmering abstraction of Canticle, it’s superb. And even better if you like the jazz-rock guitar of Chris Spedding, then you’ll be rewarded throughout. The noise floor of the vinyl could be quieter, but the pressing itself is free of faults or other noise. (Edit: I played it before cleaning — it is quieter after a good scrub.) A wonderful treat for Brit Jazz fans.
