The postie has just delivered a fine-looking copy of this record and I *think* it could be an example of the very first issue of it. However, I'm no expert on CTI, Red Clay sold in huge numbers and, as a result, got a lot of repressing very quickly (with a number of label, deadwax and cover variations). So I thought I'd ask here for a bit of the "wisdom of crowds" to see if I can get things straight. If you've got an early 1970s copy of this record, I'd be interested to know the following about your copy:
1). Label: what variant does yours have? I'm aware of WLP copies, green label copies and yellow/red cross label copies (of which there seem to be more than one sort). Photos would obviously be great!
2). Deadwax: does yours have VAN GELDER stamps and what matrix number is etched on each side? I have a strong suspicion that RVG cut multiple masters. For other labels like Blue Note, this usually meant that there was something wrong with the first cut and RVG needed to replace it and he would add a "- 1" suffix. But I think something different was going on in this case - perhaps multiple masters for multiple pressing plants? If anybody can shed light on this, I'd be interested to know.
3). Cover: is yours a gatefold? If so, is the interior black and white or colour? Does the rear have anything printed on it apart from the track listing?
If I get enough info, I might be able to establish some sort of hypothesis.
Thanks in advance!

The green label is first. Promos of that label are also first. Promos of later labels are not first.
Mine is green and a laminated gatefold. I can check the rest when I am done unpacking from my move!

I find it weird that I just found this thread, as I have a similar question...
Mine is green label - NOT gatefold. Nothing printed on the back other than the track list and CTI in the lower-left hand corner, so no indication that it’s a reprint.
It def feels 180g
What other info can I provide?

Non gatefold and 180g vinyl definitely suggests your copy is a reissue. So it's likely that the green labels you have are reproductions. Are there any markings in the deadwax of your copy?
I concur with gregorythefish about first pressings having green labels but that doesn't mean there aren't later reissues with green labels. A number of other attributes also appear to be characteristics of first pressings like laminated gatefold covers with colour interiors and VAN GELDER stamps in the deadwax.
I must get round to adding some photos of my copy to illustrate the discussion.
