I watched The Art of Drumming episode 4 (Sky Arts) yesterday and it was pretty good. It was presented by the drummer Steve White (Paul Weller/Style Council). I guessed the number 1 spot before the programme started, as I guess you will too.
But the biggest shock was the fact that Elvin Jones or Max Roach weren't in the Top 20. Shocking! Elvin Jones has been my favourite drummer for a while now. Closely followed by Max Roach. But I guess that's the problem with these types of charts...
The other shock, a nice one, was number 4. I grew up listening to this guy play the drums and I never got why people ridiculed him. He was unbelievably creative, and it was great to hear other drummers praising his work! Again, you can probably guess who I'm talking about.
Anyway, here's the list (I'd hide it to avoid spoilers so you can guess, but I can't remember how)
Keith Moon 20 Clyde Stubblefield 19 Jeff Porcaro 18 Carlton Barrett 17 Chris 'Daddy' Dave 16 Cindy Blackman 15 Steve Gadd 14 Ginger Baker 13 Earl Palmer 12 Neil Peart 11 Ian Paice 10 Billy Cobham 09 Bill Ward 08 Louie Bellson 07 Dave Grohl 06 Gene Krupa 05 Ringo 04 Hal Blaine 03 John Bonham 02 Buddy Rich 01

That last is clearly made by someone who doesn't know jazz. They should have called it to 20 rock drummers and left Rich and Krupa out.

Not even Art Blakey gets a look in so I guess I shouldn't be surprised to find that Billy Higgins, Paul Motian & Ed Blackwell are all missing. John Bonham could hit very hard but where's the bloke from Def Leppard who only had one arm?

Seemed like he was saying that, since it was really a rock list for all intents and purposes, Krupa and Rich should have been omitted because they were jazz drummers.

Louie Bellson's a jazz drummer as well so he'd be out too, though I'm a bit confused as to what he's doing here over say Roach, Jones or Blakey in the first place. And where's Tony Williams? A lot of his later work was outright rock or at least skirted close to it. Also even for a rock list it's a bit perplexing ... where's Bill Bruford? Stewart Copeland? Mitch Mitchell? Though maybe they were too jazzy for the compiler's tastes, haha. Then again that's the problem with lists like these - subjective, subjective, subjective. Who's to say who was really the best?

I don't put any stock into these list, but try to take a positive angle. Perhaps this will introduce a few folks to jazz.

No Charlie Watts? Craps on ringo. One of the most underrated drummers ever.

I doubt anyone (especially drummers) could agree on a top 20 list of anything (your local takeaway for example??)... Grohl at number 6 though?? Bit of a stretch. In (Grohl) the top 5 all round successful musician for sure. For those who said it was all rock it had def 4/5 Jazz greats in the top ten. Rich 1, Krupa 5, Bellson 7, Cobham 9 and a jazz Rock Paice at number 10. Steve White has more earned success/talent than most so..... I enjoyed it. Not sure if Ginger Baker did.

A difficult list to make...

Lists like this one are pointless, they are merely opinion, which is how they should be labeled. My favorite Twenty Drummers would be appropriate, but trying to compare many of these rock drummers to the best in jazz is ridiculous, they aren't even on the same planet in skills.
