I just re-watch the portion about Monk and Hall Overton working together before the Town Hall concert. It's almost like being there. I can only imagine the amount of time it took to initially catalog(ue) all of his photos/recordings. Amazing. gst, have you seen this book? Sam Stephenson - The Jazz Loft Project. Photographs and Tapes of W. Eugene Smith from 821 Sixth Avenue 1957-1965 (Duke University, 2010).
In the meanwhile Sam Stephenson released a new book: Gene Smith's Sink: A Wide-Angle View (2017). I ordered it yesterday.
I actually remember this coming out (perhaps from a piece done by NPR?), but I have yet to purchase it. Please let us know your thoughts.

gst, I'm not skilled in writing book reviews, I just can say the book is a masterpiece. I read it twice.

nick, Did you buy Les Liaisons Dangereuses? And if so, what are your views? I can't remember whether we have covered this elsewhere... I too have the box set and it’s excellent, however if alternate takes aren’t you thing the single LP would be just as good. Highly recommended.

i care about investment only in the sense that if money is suddenly very tight (medical emergency, natural disaster, etc), perhaps my collection would be sellable to keep us afloat. but i would never do that if I could help it. like nicknick, my collection is for me.
future collectibles will be a huge thing, i'm sure. the mosaic set prices are wild, for example.
i think the initial spike for things like the monk set, though, is mostly due to fear of missing out, and it will settle eventually.

I'm with you. I really just don't want to lose money on my "investment," but I don't care if prices ever go up. In other words my records aren't part of my retirement plan (other than listening to them!).
