Greg: "Courted by a math department." That has to be one of the least erotic courtships I have ever heard of.... ☺️

5 and 11 are 'sexy primes'. Hmm. I think that conclusively proves my point... Never mind -- on to the music. Today, Hampton Hawes THE TRIO Vol 1. I had forgotten how enjoyable this is. Herbie Hncock's POINT OF VIEW, on a mid-70s Liberty pressing. Sounds OK and is very enjoyable even though a record I don't think to play all that often. And SENNE SING SONG, Mischa Mengelberg -- God, I love this CD.

Sunday listening: maybe some of you noticed a recent post on Jazz Collector's Forum. a french guy offered a lot of interesting records shown on YouTube. oddly the clips had to be watched into a mirror. anyway I ordered some of them and have been this afternoon's listening. all from the 50's, originals and mono. Thad Jones: Motor City Scene, United Artists UAL 4025 Hal McKusick: Jazz Workshop, RCA Victor LPM 1366 Hal McKusick: Cross Section Saxes, Decca DL 9209, pink promo, flat edge unfortunately another Mckusick was already sold (on Coral). covers and records in great conditions, completely satisfied. what I did like best? the one in the middle.

Hello Dott, No, I didn't see that post on Jazz Collector, which I look at frequently (but not all that closely -- way out of my price range).
I've roamed across Evan Parker and a various odds and ends this afternoon and have just put on BLISSFUL IGNORANCE by Meadow, the European trio comprising Thomas Strønen (percussion), Tore Brunborg (saxes) and John Taylor (piano), on the small Edition Records label from 2011. Superb free-floating European jazz -- very ECM-ish, but a bit more swing. Strønen is a terrific drummer and one the reasons i return to this CD a lot.
Have you given your new records a good, satisfying clean?

alun, perhaps this then?
In any case, dott, that coral you refer to wasn't 57131, was it? Hal McKusick Quintet with Art Farmer. I found a VG+ original copy for a few dollars and thought it looked neat. Little did I know until I looked it up that it is actually quite rare, often selling for $100+! it is a great album, and once again, we think very much alike!
in terms of LISTENING, i haven't had a ton of time lately, but i did score some very nice records on the little-known west coast MODE label recently, as evidenced by my last posting about the herbie harper sextet.
yesterday i enjoyed buddy collette and herbie mann's "Flute Fraternity". every herbie mann album seems to suffer from horribly stupid names, and flute is not always the most attractive instrument, but after thoroughly enjoying "flute souffle" i was sold enough to give him another shot. plus, i love the hand-painted mode covers. both he and collette play in the very low range of the flute for the most part, and it makes for very cool listening. also a handful of saxophones make an appearance, and the rhythm holds it in tight and locked, so i really liked the album.
next mode on tap is the frank rosolino quintet, which is apparently rather rare. i got lucky!

Greg, despite (or perhaps because of) her weird mathematical trousers, I am not convinced

I dig Mode covers and music: I've got some. Pepper Adams quintet, Conte Candoli quartet, Eddie Costa quintet, Don Fagerquist Music to fill a void, Terry Gibbs a Jazz band ball, Herbie Harper sextet, Stan Levey quintet, Mel Lewis sextet, Herbie Mann/Buddy Collette Flute fraternity, Marty Paich trio, Frank Rosolino quintet and Stu Williamson A jazz band ball.

I currently only have 4 mode titles, as the label was a recent discovery for me: pepper adams, frank rosolino, herbie harper, and mann/collette. there will be others, especially since the whole discography is only 38 titles, i believe. i bet i can complete the set in the future. that mckusick on coral is a very nice listen. keep your eyes out for another one. you'll be glad you did. it isn't impossibly rare, just rare enough that i got a good steal on my copy. speaking of mode, i finally got a chance to listen to my new-ish copy of frank rosolino's sole release as a leader on mode, and i really enjoyed it. trombone tends to have a blunted tonality that doesn't translate well to the front line, but his acrobatics and finesse really make it a nice listen. richie kamuca plays tenor and somehow they make a nice unison tonality together that i don't usually get from other trombone/sax combos.

I'd say Mode reflects West Coast cool, opposite to East Coast that was much harder. I dig them both. to my knowledge the only number that has a higher value on the market is Richie Kamuca, followed by Warne Marsh, anyway not so expensive, around 100 $. I'll display all mine, three at a time. Fagerquist's cover has a bad water stain on front but back cover and record are beautiful. As you can see there are two different styles in Mode covers: a serious one, which I like best, with portraits of musicians drawed by artist Eva Diana and funny sketches by Bill Box.

Dott, I love those Bill Box covers. Didn't he also do MUSIC FOR PRANCING by Wayne Marsh? I also like the enigmatic strapless they have on them 'the poor people of Beverly Hills'; 'music to fill a void'... Very odd. But I don't know the records themselves at all.

right Alun: Marsh cover is by Bill Box. Mode records came with two labels. up to #109 the label was grey, then turned into black/red. there should be 30 issues: 17 are portraits by Eva Diana, like the three shown here.

I love seeing those Mode portrait covers together. Shown in groups really highlights how elegant and skillfully executed they are.

I dig them too, here are my last three. on Mode there are some singers which I'm not interested in: I had a few but sold them. I never keep a record I don't love. I had Paul Togawa too but it's no more in my collection.
