I understand the need to control a collection, but I'm not at that point right now. I have been giving more records away recently, but between this place and Instagram my Discog want list has grown to almost 350 albums. I'm hoping a new house with a dedicated record room will fix my storage problem

i have no desire to limit my collecting. i like to feel like i have a well-curated collection of great jazz, although someday the hunt will decline to things i have little desire to seek, but for now i am enjoying myself. i believe my collection numbers about 1000 individual platters.
as for a diagram, alun: you place rulers (thin plastic ones) at the top and bottom seams inside the jacket, then slide the record in its sleeve in underneath them, for maximum chances of success. use the pencil to mark where any obstructions are.
sztiv, i asked if you were serious, but i got no answer! i might actually post some.

I believe limits is a matter of age. When you are young, you want everything, as much as possible and even impossible. Then your appetites somewhat moderate, and you become wiser.
I just want my collection be adequate to my current tastes and interests. Another important point - the vinyls you have shall be played. If you have tens thousand LPs, that means overwhelming majority of them never reach your turntable. You don't play them, nobody plays them? and this is so sad.
Well, I do realize that many people think in a different way. Louis Armstrong had a huge collection of records (not only jazz). Dorthaan Kirk, Rahsaan Roland Kirk's wife remembers: "When he died, he had more than 7,000 albums. I know because I inventoried them when we moved from Philadelphia to East Orange, N.J., in 1974. When I went with him to the record store, I’d have to read every title, every composer, every sideman, and he would explain how they were important even though they were sidemen. He had to go to the store every week to find out what the new releases were - he often would go to the store by himself. He’d take the 88 bus to Port Authority; the cops at the Port Authority would get him a taxi to Ponte Music Company, then he’d go to Happy Tunes in the Village, where Jim Eigo would help him go through the records. Jim would get him a taxi and call me to tell me approximately what time his bus would get back to Jersey.”
So let's all kinds of flowers blossom, as Chairman Mao was saying:-)

Joining the crazyness. due to my "old age"(late fifties ;-D ) i started to collect Lps early on, when vinyl was still the main ingredient. but I didn't know any better. back then i thought the best Miles Davis albums were the japanese pressings that asked for ridiculous money and had no knowledge of mono or stereo eyes or deep groove. Blue Notes albums you found were blue labels with dark note and the cute blue note wallpaper inner sleeve and that was the way to go. Music prevailed over vintage pressings anyway.
As i used to be some kind of hifi freak too, it happened i chose to sell some records/or gear to finance new toys - and sometimes just to make ends meet, too. at the end of the day, it helped me find some wisdom about both passions and accept compromise as fair game. actually i didn't let go jazz Lp rarities because i didn't have any to start with. then my tastes broadened, i did some d-jing for years which expanded the collection to latin, soul, funk, hip-hop, house and electronica. when we moved in our current house near the new millenium, i had over 5000 Lps and 12"s and my friends hated me on that day.
anyway, a few years ago, i decided to slim the Lp collection to essentials of better vintage instead of full discographies. then i got rid of most of the stuff i hadn't listened to in 10 years - except for classics (Bjork albums and remixes are part of it ;-D now i'm probably down to half of it but still need to take care of the 12"s section. i suppose i could be happy with a 500 Lps collection.

since people asked, i will oblige. here are just two pictures of the haunted house (apartment) i live in with my other half, who also has odd collecting habits (mostly old mannequins and similar ephemera). we also have a lazy pug dog. i am bad at taking pictures, as anyone who follows my collector instagram will already know.

I'm guilty of rarely adding pictures. The reason is that i'm usually posting on a borrowed iPad if at home and i find adding pictures a pain. In addition, m as i don't have a mobile phone or digital camera, i can only use what pictures i can find online... Yes, i know, one of these days i will be dragged kicking and screaming into the twenty-first century... But don't hold your breath waiting.

As Diogenes Laërtius once said, this guy has surpassed me in simplicity of life. By the way, Paul Lovens doesn't have neither mobile phone nor e-mail address.
