I get tired of reading hagiographies about Miles Davis. [ ... ] Rikki, you're so right on everything ... well, almost.
I have listened to "Sketches of Spain" time and again. But the mere thought of replacing Miles with Freddie Hubbard makes me shudder.
On many occasions, Miles was the "enabler" who made the music happen. Trane, Garland, Chambers, and Philly were so much better on the Prestige dates with Miles than on most of the other things they recorded (at that time, that is to say).
OK, Miles didn't invent modal jazz, but without him the "grand fluke" that resulted in "Kind of Blue" wouldn't have happened.
Or let's take the "Tribute to Miles" sessions, with Wallace Roney actually replacing Miles in a re-make of the second quintet: For all the good intent, I think the magic is gone.
-- Still, calling him the greatest musical genius of all time or the like would be, well, ridiculous.
